PaddlePop Weekly #9

So remember when I said we were sticking to the schedule? I lied. Whoops 😣

BUT, self care is important, so after a fabulous and restful week off (that may or may not have involved crying to sad Coldplay songs), The Court Whisperer is back and better than ever.

Thanks Lord of the Swings, but I got it from here.

🕺Backhand to the Future, where we all aged ourselves by revealing how many 80s hits we remembered.

Last week, we held our first ever 80s-themed pickleball session, and it was a smashing success. The PSC crew definitely got the memo, showing up in our explosively colourful and swanky outfits that may or may not have been gathering dust in our closets as we waited for the perfect opportunity to show them off again.

Here are some of our favourite pictures of the night:

The gang definitely got the memo. I have never seen a better-dressed set of people in my life.

Ok matching set duo, very slay.

Is this a Duran Duran revival?

It seems as though showing up wearing headbands, wrist bands, and offensively-coloured clothing vastly improves playing skills and vibes. Correlation or causation? Who knows.

Thank you all for making this community so fun and vibrant. If you’d like to see more events like this, or have any suggestions for the next themed night (K-pop themed perhaps?), drop us a DM on on Instagram @notapaddlecult !

💬 Opinion of the Week: Is Age Just A Number In Pickleball?

It’s no secret that any sport is hard on your body. Take gymnastics for example- most athletes retire by their early 20s because of the huge amount of strain on their bodies. But, it seems that doesn’t apply to our PSC group and pickleball in general. Apparently, players over the age of 65 make up a whopping 15.4%, with those between the ages of 25-34 just topping it at 16.7%

I mean, we definitely have some very formidable players from older age groups, so what makes pickleball so different when it comes to age inclusivity?

Well, Time Magazine reports that older adults particularly love pickleball because it’s easier on the joints. With shorter sprints across a smaller court, and less of an impact when receiving a ball, older people aren’t automatically cut out of the game if they run into mobility issues.

Having a smaller court also means that pickleball becomes a game of strategy instead of other racquet sports that involve both brains and brawns. Instead of exerting large amounts of energy just to get the ball across to the other side, pickleball players can send sneaky shots across with a well-planned soft dink, testing the extent of their intelligence every session.

Most importantly, it gives older players an avenue to form a community with other players, both young and old, which they might have lost when they were no longer able to play other sports.

Regardless of age, pickleball is a great avenue to sweat it out, have fun, and make friends. And that’s something that everyone deserves to have.
